Mens Highland attire.

This an example of the typical attire of a highlander prior to the appearance of the kilt in the late 1500's
He is not wearing his "shaggy" mantle a brightly colored cloak pinned about the neck and reaching to his ankles
also worn (not shown) Trews "trousers".

The two highlanders shown below are dressed first - On your right, late 1500's to the 1700's with a two handed claymore - on the left, mid 1600's to mid 1700's with a basket hilt.sword.

Serious work a foot - Slaying Sassenaches
The foot gear seen in this picture represents what the Highlander wore. Bare footed and bare legged was the prefered way. Brogs, worn in cold weather as a very basic foot covering. Usually made of deer, cow, or horse hide and tied front and back with a leather strap. Cuarrans , a high boot usually made in a similar fashion as the brogs.
